HE WON THE FIRST OF 24 ENGLAND CAPS AGAINST WALES IN THE 1926 FIVE NATIONS AND THE FOLLOWING YEAR WAS PART OF THE SIDE THAT TOOK THE GRAND SLAM. ANOTHER LIONS TOUR FOLLOWED TO NEW ZEALAND IN 1959 AND THE FOLLOWING YEAR WAS HANDED THE ENGLAND CAPTAINCY. IN HIS FIRST YEAR HE LEAD THE SIDE TO THE FIVE NATIONS TITLE AND TRIPLE CROWN, IN TOTAL SHIPPERING ENGLAND 13 TIMES. HIS LAST TEST FOR ENGLAND CAME IN 1962 BUT WENT ON TO PLAY A KEY ROLE IN THE 1962 LIONS, CAPTAINING THE SIDE IN THE FOURTH AND FINAL TEST AFTER INJURY TO ARTHUR SMITH. HE LATER WENT ON TO BECOME AN ENGLAND SELECTOR AND THEN RFU PRESIDENT IN 1976 BEFORE MOVING ON TO BECOME THE CHAIRMAN OF THE BRITISH SPORTS COUNCIL.
